Engineering Thermal Properties for Thermal Management and Energy Applications

报告摘要:
           Tuning the thermal conductivity of existing materials is of great importance in the applications of thermal management and thermal energy conversion. In the first part of this talk, I will present an effective method to tune the thermal conductivity of individual nanostructures by applying strain/stress. Under strain/stress, the thermal conductivity of inorganic materials and organic materials varies completely different, which is explained from their distinct atomic structures. When individual materials form composites and nano/micro-devices, interfacial phonon transport becomes critical in determining the thermal properties and device performance. In this second part, I will present an approach to study the phonon transmission across complex interfaces. Results of phonon transmission across several distinct interfaces will be discussed. Finally, I will talk about our recent development of novel metallic alloy phase change materials for thermal energy storage. These materials have both high latent heat and high thermal conductivity, which are attractive for large-scale applications.
References:
             Xiaobo Li received his B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004 and his M.S. from the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2012 and then joined the NanoEngineering Group of MIT as a PostDoc. His is interested in research in thermophysical properties and nanoscale heat transfer with applications in thermal storage, thermoelectric energy conversion, and thermal management. He published 8 journal papers, which have been cited 144 times. He is an invited reviewer for a number of journals, such as Journal of Applied Physics, Annual review of heat transfer, International Journal of Thermophysics, Journal of the American Chemical Society.
